“A Prose Poem About Dolls”

casey dollFor about five obsessive years, I sculpted one-of-a-kind creatures that some refer to as dolls. I referred to them as fabric or clay ‘figures’; never meant to be a plaything. This one, about 1995, took me weeks to construct.  Never made any real money from my labor of love. Her face: paper mache formed  by hand and painted. The rest of her made from an old tea-dyed sheet. Hair from an adult human wig, torn apart and restitched.  Jacket from an old tablecloth. Painting her face, I must have been thinking of a clown or a scarecrow.  My dolls had names but can’t remember hers.  I always talked to them.  They became a temporary companion. Why is she sitting on my poetry site?  I don’t know.  Your guess is as good as mine.  In retrospect, maybe she is a poem…of sorts…a 3 dimensional one.caseydoll 3photo by J.Casey
